PYC stands for Presbyterian Youth Connections and is open for any 7-12th grade students. We usually meet on Sunday nights at 5-8pm from September through March/April (spring break). Each Sunday we gather for worship and music, dinner, recreation and Bible study. The format is based on the Logos ministry program. Our Bible study lessons are conducted in small groups, using an age-based format with an adult leader. We also participate in special events through out the year including a Winter Retreat, Youth Sunday, and the “Souper Bowl of Caring.”
Each summer the incoming ninth graders through graduating seniors go on a summer trip. In even-numbered years the PYC attends a youth conference which focuses on inward spiritual growth for the youth. For the summer of 2010 the PYC council has chosen to go to Montreat College’s youth retreat in North Carolina. In odd-numbered years, the PYC participates in a service or mission trip. In 2009 the youth went to Red Bird Mission in Beverly, Kentucky and in 2007 they went to New York City. After these trips youth are invited to share their experiences during a Sunday worship service.
Confirmation is an opportunity for any ninth grade student to confirm his or her faith and become a member of Fairmont Presbyterian Church. (Those still in high school who are 10-12th graders and are not yet confirmed may join the confirmation class or the adult membership class.)
Classes start in January and members meet once a week for approximately ten weeks. The classes cover a variety of topics including church history, polity and personal faith development. Each teen partner is with one parent or guardian who attends confirmation class and events with him or her, as well as a Session Elder who serves as a prayer partner. These classes are taught by the Director of Ministry for Children, Youth and Families and can be contacted for more information.
